In this modern age, we are all familiar with the many kinds of chemical drugs available. This is due to numerous breakthroughs in treating various diseases. However, we must not forget that chemical drugs often have side effects for patients. For example, anti-inflammatory drugs can cause stomach irritation, and antibiotics may contribute to bacterial resistance (Andrade et al., 2006; Lazarou et al., 1998).

Because of these side effects, many people turn back to traditional treatment methods. Traditional medicine is often perceived as safer, with minimal side effects, and relatively affordable. According to the World Health Organization, traditional medicine is still widely used by around 80% of the population in many Asian and African countries (WHO, 2013; Bent, 2008).

China provides a notable example of integrative practice, where modern medical science is combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), often enhanced by advanced technology. Research shows that this integrative approach can be effective in managing chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions (Wang et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2017). This method of treatment is commonly referred to as Eastern medicine.

Western Medicine – Benefits and Considerations

Western medicine provides a variety of drugs, from common painkillers like aspirin to expensive specialty medicines. These drugs are manufactured with advanced technology and contain either organic or inorganic compounds. Organic compounds are broken down by the body, while inorganic compounds—such as sodium, zinc, magnesium, and calcium—are mostly excreted through urine. Drinking enough water, around 2 liters per day, helps the kidneys process these substances safely (Palmer, 2003; KDIGO, 2012).

While Western medicine is effective in treating diseases quickly, it sometimes focuses mainly on immediate symptoms without fully considering long-term effects on other organs (Kaptchuk, 2002). Over time, repeated treatments may affect overall health. Additionally, the commercial aspect of modern medicine is often noticed by patients, as people frequently return for new treatments once another illness arises (Andrade et al., 2006; Lazarou et al., 1998).


Eastern Medicine – How It Works

The concept of Eastern medicine is quite different from that of Western medicine. In many societies, drinking herbal concoctions made from leaves has become a common practice to maintain health or alleviate ailments such as colds and coughs. Eastern medicine does not aim to directly cure illness; instead, it focuses on supporting the body’s natural processes, including the removal of toxins and the recovery of organs through specific herbal remedies.

Research shows that certain herbal compounds, such as ginseng, ginger, and green tea, can enhance immune system function and help the body fight diseases more effectively (Block et al., 2003; Chan, 2002). Other studies indicate that herbal remedies may support liver and kidney function and reduce oxidative stress, contributing to overall detoxification (Li et al., 2011; Panossian, 2000). This approach emphasizes preventive care and strengthening the body’s natural defenses rather than relying solely on external medications (Wang et al., 2013).


This is the fundamental difference between Western and Eastern medicine.

Western Medicine / Synthetic Chemicals

Western medicine, which originated in Western countries, primarily relies on chemically synthesized compounds to treat diseases. About 50–80% of these synthetic chemicals are biodegradable, but many remain in the body or environment, potentially causing long-term effects (Kümmerer, 2001). The main focus of Western medicine is often symptom relief rather than addressing the underlying causes of illness. This symptom-based, palliative approach provides rapid relief, especially for acute conditions such as asthma attacks, diarrhea, fractures, or infections (Kaptchuk, 2002; Wang et al., 2013).

However, prolonged or incorrect use of synthetic drugs may weaken organs including the liver and kidneys, affect blood lipid levels, and impair the immune system (Palmer, 2003; KDIGO, 2012; Lazarou et al., 1998; Andrade et al., 2006). Western medicine generally treats illness as the enemy, aiming to eliminate disease, but it often achieves partial relief rather than a complete cure.

Many synthetic drugs are recently developed and are tested on animals before approval for human use. Additionally, some synthetic medications rarely carry HALAL certification and may contain questionable or potentially hazardous substances, which is an important consideration for certain populations.


Eastern Medicine / Herbal Treatments

Eastern medicine, which originates from regions such as China, Japan, Korea, India, Indonesia, and the Middle East, primarily relies on natural or organic ingredients to maintain health and treat illnesses. Herbal remedies are highly absorbable, with studies suggesting that the body can utilize up to 90% of the active compounds (Chan, 2002; Block et al., 2003).

Unlike Western medicine, Eastern medicine focuses on addressing the root causes of disease and restoring the function of damaged organs and tissues. Its approach is reconstructive and curative, aiming to truly heal rather than merely relieve symptoms. This method is particularly effective for preventing illness, managing complications of chronic diseases, and treating conditions that require prolonged care.

The effects of herbal treatment are generally slower than synthetic drugs, but they are constructive, helping repair and rebuild organs, tissues, and cells over time. Side effects are minimal or almost nonexistent, and herbal treatments have been shown to support and enhance the immune system (Li et al., 2011; Panossian, 2000).

Eastern medicine follows the paradigm that illness arises from an imbalance of energy rather than being an enemy to the body. Its treatments are holistic, addressing the whole person, and causative, targeting the underlying reason for disease. Herbal remedies have been used and tested on humans for thousands of years and are considered lawful and safe, as they are derived from pure plants and natural sources.


Conclusion

Western medicine and Eastern medicine represent two distinct approaches to health and healing. Western medicine focuses on rapid symptom relief, using chemically synthesized drugs that are effective for acute conditions but may carry side effects and impact other organs over time. It treats illness as an enemy and often achieves partial relief rather than complete cure.

In contrast, Eastern medicine emphasizes natural, herbal remedies that work slowly but constructively, addressing the root causes of disease and supporting the body’s own healing and immune system. This holistic and preventive approach minimizes side effects and promotes long-term health by restoring balance within the body.

Ultimately, both systems have their strengths: Western medicine is invaluable for acute and life-threatening conditions, while Eastern medicine excels in preventive care, chronic disease management, and supporting overall wellness. Integrating the best of both approaches may offer a more balanced and effective path to health.
